When a Filling Fails

Fillings work hard every single day. They take on every bite, every snack, every temperature change, and every chewing habit you throw at them. Over time, they wear down just like anything else you rely on. A tiny crack, a little shift, or a bit of wear creates an opening that bacteria exploit. The key to reducing further damage involves noticing small changes before they turn into bigger ones.

Recognizing a Damaged Filling

Here are a few things that occur when a filling no longer protects your tooth.

Tooth Sensitivity

That quick jolt in your tooth when eating or drinking something spicy, cold, hot, or sweet often means that the filling protecting the tooth no longer seals the enamel tightly. Tiny gaps allow temperature changes and food ingredients to affect the nerves inside the tooth, causing extreme sensitivity. Don’t suffer through the pain; contact the Yuba City Dentistry Group right away!

Tooth Pain

A tooth that aches, throbs, or hurts when you bite down deserves immediate attention! Pain often signals decay hiding under a worn filling or a small crack in the tooth that you can’t see. Professional examination and modern dental imaging can find decay that needs to be eliminated.

A Tooth That Feels “Off”

Your tongue is very sensitive and notices everything. Trust the judgment of this important body part! A new rough spot, a small dip in the enamel surface, a sharper edge on the crown of a tooth, all can point to a cracked or lost filling. Just minor changes can leave the inner tooth exposed to infection.

Funky Tastes and Foul Odors

A lingering foul, sour, or rotten taste or odor in your mouth can come from bacteria hiding under a loose filling. Brushing, flossing, and mouthwash won’t fix the problem because they can’t effectively reach the area where the bacteria are hiding. Only professional treatment will stop bacteria from continuing to do damage underneath a loose or ill-fitting filling.

Can’t Find the Filling

Sometimes the sign is right there — an empty space where a filling used to sit! This calls for quick attention on your part with a visit to our emergency dentist in Yuba City.
A damaged filling leaves your tooth unprotected. Once bacteria slip in and hide in the exposed area, decay grows quickly and may lead to a painful infection or more involved treatment. Replacing a worn filling early makes treatment easy, saves your natural tooth, and keeps your smile healthy.

I have been there twice now and truthfully a wonderful experience both times. The staff is very kind and informative. They are quick with insurance quotes. I find the pricing fair. The doctor I’ve seen both times is great! He tells me everything that is going on, what he’s doing, and always checks to make sure I’m not feeling discomfort or pain. I’m looking forward to my visit in April 🙂
