How Ultrasonic Scalers Improve Dental Cleanings

Years ago, dental cleanings were completed solely with hand instruments. Hygienists used to scrape plaque and tartar from the teeth, one area at a time. Today, ultrasonic scaling tools are commonly used by our dentist in Yuba City and other modern dental teams to make cleanings more efficient. How do these exciting devices improve dental cleanings and why should you experience them at least twice a year?

Before Ultrasonic Scalers

Before ultrasonic scalers saw widespread use, dental teams relied on hand scalers and curettes to clean and remove buildup. These rounded metal tools are perfect for scaling a variety of curved tooth surfaces. They allow hygienists to feel the irregularities on the root surface and the gumline, enabling a thorough and precise removal of plaque and tartar.

Even after the invention of modern tools, hand instruments remain invaluable. They are often used in final detail work by smoothing specific spots, removing stubborn deposits, and helping in tooth and gum areas where a lighter touch is more effective. In other words, skillful hand care is not replaced by modern tools such as ultrasonic scalers, but technology has brought greater efficiency and effectiveness.

How Ultrasonic Scalers Work

Ultrasonic scalers operate through high-speed vibrations of the tip, coupled with a constant flow of water. The vibrations dislodge tartar and break down biofilms on both teeth and gums. Water provides cooling for the tip and rinses away debris.

There are two types of ultrasonic scalers commonly used in dental offices. Magnetostrictive scalers are often used for general, fast, and heavy-duty cleaning. A piezoelectric scaler is for more precise, delicate, or detailed cleaning. Both tools clean very well.

Benefits of Ultrasonic Scalers

One significant advantage of ultrasonic scalers is the speed at which they do their job. Ultrasonic scalers can remove plaque and tartar more quickly than hand instruments. This means a more timely appointment for patients, particularly those with moderate to severe tartar accumulation.

Another benefit is the ultrasonic scaler’s improved disruption of biofilms. Oral biofilms are thin and sticky barriers created by bacteria to protect themselves. The steady water action and rapid vibration of the ultrasonic tool effectively break that barrier, reaching into small grooves, pockets, and tight contours that can’t be reached by traditional hand scaling tools.

Many patients also like the lighter scraping sensation with ultrasonic scalers, despite the louder noise. Instead of long periods of firm hand scaling (resulting at times in sore teeth or gums), the visit feels quicker and more comfortable. For routine hygiene, periodontal maintenance, and deeper cleanings around inflamed gums, ultrasonic scalers often play a major role.

Limitations of Ultrasonic Scalers

Ultrasonic scalers are not the best tool for every dental cleaning problem. Hand instruments are still best for detail work. In addition, some patients dislike the sound, spray, or vibration of an ultrasonic scaler, preferring the hand tool method. And if a patient has extremely sensitive teeth, then an ultrasonic scaler may not be the best for them.
