Orthodontic Injuries – What to Do
Braces, retainers, and other orthodontic appliances play an important role in creating a healthy smile. Unfortunately, accidents, falls, or sports collisions can sometimes cause injuries to the mouth and surrounding tissues. If this happens, Yuba City Dentistry Group is here to ease your pain and provide immediate care.
Common Orthodontic Injuries
Orthodontic emergencies may include:
- Cuts, punctures, or scrapes from loose brackets or broken wires
- Direct trauma to the face, teeth, or jaw
- Visible swelling or redness in the mouth area
- Sharp, consistent, or intense pain
- Bent or damaged brackets, wires, or retainers
- Teeth that become loose or are knocked out
- Broken or damaged mouthguards
First Aid for Orthodontic Injuries
If you’re experiencing an orthodontic injury, we recommend the following steps to take before visiting the dentist:
- Rinse with saltwater: Warm saltwater will clean the area and help reduce irritation.
- Use a cold compress: Apply a cold pack or cloth to the affected area to reduce swelling and ease pain.
- Eat soft foods: Avoid crunchy or hard food items may worsen the injury.
- Take pain relievers: Safe pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be taken to help manage pain. However, Aspirin is not recommended, as it may increase bleeding.

Orthodontic Injury FAQs
Is a poking wire an emergency?
It’s generally urgent, not life-threatening. Cover the wire with orthodontic wax and contact us. If pain is severe or teeth are injured, seek immediate care.
Can I trim a wire at home?
Only if absolutely necessary and you can’t get in right away. If so, disinfect small nail clippers, carefully snip the tip, and re-cover with wax. Schedule a professional visit as soon as possible.
What if a bracket comes loose?
If the bracket is still attached to the wire, cover it with wax and avoid chewing on that side. If it falls off, save it and bring it to your appointment.
My aligner cracked or I lost it. What now?
Keep the broken tray. If comfortable, wear your previous aligner to maintain fit and contact us for further instructions. Don’t move ahead without professional advice.
How do I relieve mouth sores from braces?
We recommend applying orthodontic wax to rough spots, rinsing with saltwater, and sticking to softer foods. Most sores improve within a few days once irritation is reduced.
When should I go to the ER?
An ER visit is required if you experience head or facial trauma, uncontrolled bleeding, knocked-out teeth, excessive swelling and fever, or trouble breathing/swallowing.
