Knocked-Out Tooth – What to Do

Losing a tooth suddenly is not only painful but frightening, too. Acting quickly makes a big difference. Contact the Yuba City Dentistry Group right away for urgent care. Our emergency team is prepared to help save or restore your tooth.

First Aid for an Avulsed Tooth

If your tooth has been knocked out, take these steps immediately:

  • Locate the tooth: Quickly find the tooth and pick it up carefully, holding only the crown of the tooth, not the root. Rinse the tooth gently with clean water.
  • Reinsert if you can: Place the tooth back into its socket and hold it in place with your fingers or bite down gently for at least five minutes.
  • Stabilize it: Use gauze or a damp tea bag to cushion and hold the tooth in position.

If reinsertion isn’t possible:

  • Keep it moist: Store the tooth in your mouth between the cheek and gums, or place it in cold milk. Avoid plain water.
  • Minimize bleeding: Apply gauze, a tea bag, or another clean cloth directly over the area with the missing tooth, and apply gentle pressure to reduce the bleeding.
  • Call right away: Contact Yuba City Dentistry Group at (530) 803-4977 for emergency care.

Taking these steps immediately gives you the best chance of saving your natural tooth.

Tooth Knocked Out FAQs

What’s the very first step after a tooth is knocked out?

If it is a permanent tooth, pick it up holding it by the crown, rinse it, and then place it back into the socket right away. If this isn’t possible, then be sure to keep the tooth moist by placing it safely in a container with milk or saliva and come to our office immediately.

How much time do I have to save the tooth?

The sooner the better, ideally within 30–60 minutes. Always keep the tooth moist during this time.

Should I try to reinsert a baby tooth?

No. Primary teeth should not be replanted. We will protect the area and monitor the permanent tooth developing beneath it.

What’s the best way to store the tooth if I can’t put it back in?

Milk or your saliva are the safest options. Specialized tooth preservation kits are best if available. Never allow the tooth to dry out.

Will I need a root canal after the tooth is replanted?

In many cases, yes. Mature permanent teeth often require root canal therapy after replantation. The need depends on root development and how long the tooth was out.

Do I need a mouthguard after recovery?

Yes, we highly recommend using a custom-fitted mouthguard when participating in sports. This will help prevent future injuries and protect restored teeth.

I got my All-on-4 permanent teeth done in Vegas but they were really bad quality. I finally went to Yuba City Dentistry & the Dr (Can’t remember his name but he was a gorgeous Indian man) and he did a phenomenal job. My teeth look absolutely perfect & I can eat anything. The girls are all so very sweet & gentle handed. I’m a customer for life!!
