Benefits

  • Prevents problems caused by impaction, crowding, and partially erupted teeth that constantly trap bacteria.
  • Protects adjacent teeth and the jawbone from damage, cysts, or decay as a result of difficult-to-clean wisdom teeth.
  • Reduces pain and swelling associated with inflamed gum tissue over erupting wisdom teeth.
  • Streamlined care with evaluation, imaging, anesthesia options, and post-op guidance provided by the Yuba City Dentistry Group team.

The Extraction Procedure

After a comprehensive exam and imaging, our Yuba City dentist will recommend the best approach. Single-tooth extractions are typically completed with local anesthetic; multiple extractions may include sedation or general anesthesia for your comfort. Learn more about comfort options on our sedation dentistry page.

  1. Anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable.
  2. We prepare the area by making a small incision in the gum, especially if the tooth being removed is impacted. If necessary, the bone may be contoured to more easily free the tooth.
  3. We extract the wisdom tooth by gently loosening it.
  4. Stitches are placed, and gauze is positioned over the area to reduce bleeding.
  5. You recover by resting briefly, and then you return home with written aftercare instructions.

Candidacy & Alternatives

  • Good candidates for wisdom teeth extraction include patients with impacted or incorrectly angled wisdom teeth, insufficient jaw space, recurrent gum infections in the area, or a cyst formation identified by imaging.
  • Monitoring instead of extraction is recommended if the wisdom teeth are fully erupted, not causing pain, and are easily kept clean.
  • Orthodontic collaboration is common if spacing and crowding of teeth are a concern. We will discuss the right time for wisdom tooth extraction and work closely with your orthodontist if needed. If straightening your teeth is part of the plan, we can also discuss options like Invisalign.

Cost & Insurance

The fees for wisdom tooth extraction are determined based on tooth position, impaction, number of teeth being extracted, and anesthesia type. We always provide a written estimate after your consultation and exam to help you maximize dental insurance benefits. The Yuba City Dentistry Group also periodically offers promotional pricing for wisdom teeth extraction.

  • Insurance: Coverage differs by plan; many policies cover part of the procedure after the deductible/coinsurance.
  • Financing: We accept CareCredit®, Cherry, and Proceed Finance, making it easier to fit treatment costs into your budget.
  • Second opinions: We welcome them; bring recent X-rays if available to streamline your visit.

After Procedure Home Care

  • Rest and elevate your head, especially for the first 24–48 hours, to minimize bleeding and swelling.
  • Cold packs on the cheek in short intervals can reduce swelling during the first day.
  • Gauze changes as directed to control bleeding.
  • Rinse gently with warm salt water after the first day to keep the extraction area clean.
  • Eat soft foods for several days, adding back in other foods as comfortable. Avoid smoking and closely follow any medication instructions provided.
  • Contact us anytime with questions or concerns, and we will schedule a visit to our office if needed.

Wisdom Teeth Extraction FAQs

Do all wisdom teeth need to be removed?

No. If wisdom teeth are fully erupted, painless, easy to clean, and not harming nearby teeth or bone, your dentist may recommend periodic monitoring instead of surgery.

How long does the procedure take?

The procedure time depends on the number of teeth being extracted and the complexity. Our Yuba City dentist provides an expected timeline at your consultation.

What type of anesthesia or sedation is used?

Local anesthetic is common for the extraction of one tooth. For multiple teeth or the extraction of impacted teeth, deeper sedation or general anesthesia is used, depending on your needs. See sedation dentistry for details.

What can I eat after wisdom teeth removal?

We recommend starting off with soft, cool foods (yogurt, smoothies by spoon, soup when cooled) and then adding back in additional foods as comfortable.

How do I control swelling and bleeding?

Swelling and minor bleeding are normal after extraction. You can control or reduce these side effects by keeping your head elevated, gently placing pressure on the extraction area with clean gauze, and applying cold packs to the cheek.

When can I return to work or school?

This depends on the number of teeth you had removed, the complexity of the procedure, and whether or not you opted for anesthesia. However, most of our patients are able to return to school or work within a couple of days.

Are there risks?

All oral surgeries carry risks such as dry socket, infection, prolonged bleeding, or nerve irritation. Careful planning, good home care, and follow-up minimize these risks. We review them with you before treatment.

What if I’m unsure whether my wisdom teeth should come out?

Schedule an evaluation. Our Yuba City team will perform a thorough examination along with advanced imaging. Then we will explain the pros and cons, helping you decide if removal, monitoring, or orthodontic treatment is best for you.

I have been there twice now and truthfully a wonderful experience both times. The staff is very kind and informative. They are quick with insurance quotes. I find the pricing fair. The doctor I’ve seen both times is great! He tells me everything that is going on, what he’s doing, and always checks to make sure I’m not feeling discomfort or pain. I’m looking forward to my visit in April 🙂
