If Your Tooth Comes Out

Losing a tooth unexpectedly, especially due to injury or sudden impact, is usually shocking. As we saw during the Winter Olympics, it’s something that unfortunately happens to hockey players regularly! The good news is that even if a permanent tooth comes out, it’s not always gone for good. In some cases, the tooth can be saved. The key is to stay calm, protect the tooth, and get dental care as soon as possible. The following are some specific instructions to help you in this emergency situation.

Stay Calm and Find the Tooth

When you lose a tooth, first take a deep breath to calm your nervous system. Next, find the tooth and pick it up carefully. Always hold it by the crown, which is the chewing surface, and avoid touching the root. If the tooth breaks apart while being handled, try to locate every piece so you can take them to your emergency dental appointment.

If necessary, clean the tooth with a gentle flow of warm tap water. Don’t use harsh chemicals to clean the tooth. Don’t scrub the tooth or dry it off! These actions decrease the chances of placing the tooth back into your mouth successfully.

Keep the Tooth Moist

Never allow a lost tooth to air dry. It is essential that it be kept moist. If possible, try placing the tooth back in the socket and gently biting down on a piece of clean gauze or cloth to keep it in place. If that doesn’t work, place the tooth in your mouth between your gum and cheek. If this isn’t comfortable, store the tooth in a small, clean container with a bit of milk or saliva to maintain moisture while traveling to the dentist. A cold pack on the exterior of your face will also help reduce swelling and discomfort.

See Us Immediately!

Prompt attention is crucial when you lose a permanent tooth. The sooner you see us, the higher the chance we have of reattaching it. Call us as soon as possible so our dental team can prepare for your arrival and start care as soon as you get to our office. We always do our best to save a natural tooth, but even if we can’t, prompt care allows us to examine, clean, and protect the surrounding teeth and gums.

If your tooth is damaged beyond repair or reinsertion, other forms of treatment exist to replace a missing tooth. We are happy to discuss restorative options such as dental implants and dental bridges, which are functional and aesthetically pleasing.
